Oscar Wilde said “Civilization requires slaves. Human slavery is wrong, insecure and demoralizing. On mechanical slavery, on the slavery of the machine, the future of the world depends.” However, our work indicates that a time might come when humans become slaves of (or at least some will work under) AI supervision. Humans are, in general, bad at discerning whether they know something or not (this phenomenon of not being able to know one's knowledge boundary is called metaknowledge). It is one of the biggest factors that humans working with AI may not reach their full potential. It also makes humans dependent on the AI a lot more, because the AI can delegate very well! . Humans are bad at assessing whether a difficult task is difficult or not beyond a certain level of difficulty. So even if they try with the best of intentions, their efforts are doomed and rarely successful. Interested in more? In addition to these profitability sources, our work suggests another important, but heretofore overlooked, factor in the managerial quest for competitive advantage: the value-creating potential of alliance networks. We employ a machine-learning algorithm to detect firms' network memberships. Our findings indicate that as much as 11% of the variance in firm profitability (ROA) is explained by the network of alliances of which the firm is a part. Our study also mplies that the emphasis on networks continues to be relevant in a technology age in which industry boundaries are blurring.

This video is a short graphic representation of our academic research paper as published in MIS Quarterly and HBR. Using randomized field experiments, we show that mobile health apps and wearable devices do lead patients to change their behaviors in ways that can positively affect their health. This offers not just patients but also care providers and health insurers with opportunities. But surprising results about the effectiveness of personalized vs. non-personalized nudges means that there is no clear-cut way to remind patients to adopt healthy behaviors. This suggests that health care providers need to experiment to find out what works best with patients.
